Folk medicinal uses

Beckwith has recorded the use of this species in the treatment of gonorrhoea: we are now able to confirm its continued use for this purpose. When crushed, it is applied as a dressing for "fresh cuts" and is used in baths for ulcers. In Africa the juice has been used as an eye lotion and the pounded leaves mixed with Piper nigrum and other plants is applied as a poultice to swelling in the groin.
